Tyre Replacement or Tyre Repair?
Whether a puncture can be repaired depends on the criteria set by British Standard BSAU159. If your tyre meets the conditions below, it can usually be safely patched instead of replaced:
If your tyre does not meet these requirements, we will recommend replacement and can fit a new tyre immediately from the wide stock we carry.
The puncture is within the repairable area
Only damage in the central three-quarters of the tread can usually be repaired. Sidewall punctures cannot be patched, as the preparation process could weaken the structure and flexing could cause the repair to fail.
The puncture is no larger than 6 mm
Six millimetres is the maximum size of puncture that can be safely repaired. Smaller holes, such as those caused by nails or screws, can often be patched, while larger cuts or tears usually require full replacement.
Only one puncture per tyre quadrant
Each section of the tyre can only be safely repaired once. Multiple punctures in the same area could compromise the strength of the tyre.
A maximum of three puncture repairs per tyre
Once a tyre has been repaired three times, it must be replaced for safety reasons.
The tyre is otherwise roadworthy
Repairs can only be carried out if the tyre meets the minimum legal tread depth of 1.6 mm and shows no signs of bulging, cracking, or exposed cords.
